Triner & Bayly see B&K to another Premier success
Bradninch & Kentisbeare were five wicket winners when they entertained Heathcoat on matchday four of the Tolchards Devon League Premier Division season.
Skipper Gary Chappell lost the toss and, on what looked a ‘peach’ of a track the visiting skipper wasted no time in choosing to bat, but a terrific all-round display with the ball saw the Knightshayes men bowled out for 198 in one ball shy of 44 overs.
Five bowlers turned their arm over for the B&K cause and the pick of the returns was undoubtedly the 4-54 from the 10 overs sent down by Josh Farley.
Mitch Pugh – who set the tone for the afternoon along with fellow new ball bowler Yuvraj Singh – returned figures of 3-39 from his full compliment of 10 overs.
The Singh return was 1-31 from 10 – his being the best in terms of economy and the other two bowlers were the skipper (0-47 from nine) and Jon Triner (1-26 from 4.5 overs).
A feature of the first innings was the B&K catching with Dan Hardy (2), Mitch Pugh (2), Gary Chappell, glovesman Darren Paul and Jon Triner all showing ‘safe hands’.
Harry Cutmore, batting in the number fiver slot, top scored for Heathcoat with a 56-ball 66, hitting fours and three sixes.
Opener Dylan Penberthy-Hutchings hit a 36-ball 37 (six fours) and number ten bat Jesse-James Albanie hit four sixes in a cameo knock that saw him score 38 from 31 balls.
The B&K run chase was led by opener Tim Piper who hit seven fours in a 58-ball 46 while Yuvraj Singh chipped in with a 37-ball 36, hitting six fours and, after Theo Lamey had hit a cultured 29-ball 32, hitting three fours and one six, it was left to Jon Triner to score 25 (three fours and a six) from the 21 balls he faced and Nic Bayly to hit a three boundary 24-ball 21 to guide B&K to an impressive home win as the score board showed 202-5 after 35.2 overs when stumps were drawn.
Jamie Drew, with 2-32 from a full compliment of 10 overs, had the pick of the Heathcoat bowling returns.
SECOND XI
Gillett takes three wickets in defeat at Barum
Bradninch & Kentisbeare 2nd XI went down by four wickets on their Tolchards Devon League D Division East visit to Barnstaple & Pilton 1st XI.
The matchday four fixture saw the home skipper win the toss and invite Will Greig and his men to bat first and openers Sam Franks and Richard Norman had 26 runs on the board when, to the third delivery of the 10th over, Franks, who hit a superb unbeaten half century in the narrow midweek T20 Cup defeat at Sandford, fell for a 30-ball 10.
Todd Scrase was next man in, but he fell for a 17-ball five with the score on 38-2.
The score slipped to 91-5 after 23 overs, after the loss of Rich Norman (36 from 57), Billy Wakeley (4 from five) and skipper Will Greig (four from five).
However, Eliot Acton was still there and what he needed was to find someone to stay with him.
That someone became Ankit Badwal and the pair added 42 for the sixth wicket before Badwal fell for an 18-ball 27 which left B&K on 133-6 after 29 overs and four balls.
Acton did his best, but, from 161-6 after 36.2 overs, B&K slipped to 173 all out after 40 overs and one ball.
Acton was last man out, just four runs shy of a richly deserved half century, his runs scored off 71 balls.
The others to bat had been: Joe Gillett (16 from 26), Josh Stewart (four from four) and Bobby Marsh (0 from two).
The home side sealed a four wicket win off the first delivery of the 37th over.
However, they did have to come back from a dramatic start when young Joe Gillett claimed two wickets with the first three deliveries of the innings!
Gillett first saw wicket keeper Bobby Marsh – himself just turned 15! And then, with the very next delivery Gillett knocked over the stumps to leave B&P 0-2!
That was soon 17-3 after five overs with Gillett again striking the stumps!
The home side recovered to reach 65-4 after 18 overs – wicket four claimed by Todd Scrase with a leg below decision in his favour.
The fifth wicket fell in the 30th over with the home side on 133 – Tom Kittow hitting the stumps to end what was to ultimately prove to be the match defining knock by Andrew Fewings who, until Kittow knocked the stumps over, had scored 64 runs from 89 deliveries.
The sixth home wicket was snared by Todd Scrase as he hit the stumps to leave the home side 156-5 one ball into the 35th over.
But, by then, the damage had been done and the home side were not to lose another wicket as they marched to a four wicket success.
THIRD XI
Fine all round display from Reed’s men
Bradninch & Kentisbeare III XI returned from their G Division East visit to Cheriton Fitzpaine with a 106-run victory and it was Chris Acton who ‘stole the show’ with a superb all-round shift, first scoring 83 to underpin the B&K batting effort of 237 all out in 39 overs and two balls and then claiming three wicket as Cheriton Fitzpaine were bowled out for 131 in two balls shy of 33 overs.
Acton, who opened the innings, was helped by Connor Carthew, who scored 32, in a second wicket partnership of 87, scored in just 13 overs and there were later significant contributions from Will Diamond (28), James Mills (25), Tim Percival (14) and skipper Liam Reed (15) in the B&K total.
Acton then came into the attack as first change and went through eight overs to return impressive figures of 3-26. All the bowlers enjoyed some success with the individual returns being: George Holding (2-15), Lewis Coombes (2-16), James Mills (1-14), Rory Dennis (1-18) and Liam Reed (1-37).
Post match, skipper Liam Reed said: “This was a very well deserved win with all playing important roles throughout the match special shout outs have to go to Chris Acton for scoring 83 and picking up three wickets and also to three of our Under-18 players, Will Diamond who batted really well, scoring 28 from the 43 balls he faced; Lewis Coombes, who ended up with figures of 2-16 from six overs and George Holding who, once again, bowled really well to claim two wickets for 15 runs from two overs.
“Overall this really was a great day all-round with lots of banter going to and fro with the home side who were a great bunch. They (Cheriton Fitzpaine) also treated us to a wonderful tea and we are certainly looking forward to welcoming them to Kensham Park later in the season for the reverse fixture.”
