The 1979 cricket season was launched on May 6th with a home game against Westward Ho! Bradninch batted first and closed on 152-7 after 45 overs. John Freeman served up the ‘stand-out’ individual shift with the bat, scoring 63 and such was his dominance of the innings that the ‘best of the rest’ was a knock of 18 from two batters – number three Harold Clark and number seven John McKinnell. The only other double figure score came from opener Tim Blake, who scored 10. The others to bat were: Roger Fieldhouse (2), Mike Foan (0), Gary Hancock (7), Paul Nott (4 not out) and Dave Holmes (6 not out) while the two players not to bat were Eddie Andress and Hugh Norman. N Johns, with 4-16 from a dozen overs, returned the pick of the away bowling returns. In reply, Westward Ho! Closed on 146-8. D Baglow (37) and J Wormsley (31), provided the top batting returns while the Bradninch bowling figures were topped by Dave Holmes who claimed five wickets for 40 runs, bowling no fewer than 22 overs. Harold Clark (1-52 from 14), Hugh Norman (0-38 from 7) and John Freeman (0-9 from 2) were the others to bowl.
May 13th saw Bradninch play another league game when they travelled to meet Barnstaple Raleigh who fielded first and reduced 10-man Bradninch to an all-out figure of just 53 in 27.4 overs. John Freeman was again the top scorer with his knock of 20 being one of only two batting contributions in double figures – the other came from John McKinnell (10). The other batting scores for Bradninch were: R Fieldhouse (3), Paul Nott (8), M Foan (0), A Bance (2), G Newall (7), D Holmes (2 not out), H Norman (1), E Andress (0). A Newcombe had the best of the Raleigh bowling figures with a return of 4-8 from five overs and four balls. However, that ‘below par’ score of 53 was still sufficient to win the game with Barnstaple Raleigh bowled out for 39! Bradninch used just two bowlers and they shared the wickets – taking a ‘fivefer’ each. Dave Holms finished with figures of 5-17 from 12.4 overs while H Norman’s return was an equally impressive 5-21 from 12 overs. The Norman ‘fivefer’ saw him clean bowl four batters while his other victim was caught by John Freeman. The Holmes ‘fivefer’ was two bowled, one leg before wicket and catches held by John Freeman and Gary Newall. 19 wickets fell at Barum for a combined total of 92 runs!
Dawlish were the hosts for a May 19th fixture that saw Bradninch bat first and be bowled out for 62. John Freeman (19) top scored for the third consecutive game while number 10 bat, Eddie Andress hit three sixes before being bowled! The other Bradninch scores with the bat were: R Fieldhouse (7), Gary Newall (6), Mike Foan (0) – that a third successive ‘duck’ for Mike! Steve Birley (0), Ray Clarke (3), Vince Wilding (0), peter Elston (0), H Norman (0) and Mike Chapman (0). Dawlish sealed a seven wicket win in just 16 overs. They were 10-3 before an unbeaten 34 from number four bat N Khan saw them home. The Bradninch bowling returns were Steve Birley (2-16 from six), John Freeman (1-14 from five), H Norman (0-17 from 3) and Ed Andress (0-10 from 2).
Tiverton Heathcoat were the May 20th visitors to Bradninch, and the away side batted first, closing on 167-9 thanks, in the main, to a knock of 56 from J Edwards and an unbeaten 50 from K Sutton. Dave Holmes bowled unchanged from one end finishing with figures of 5-51 from 19.1 overs while Steve Birley, who shared the new ball with Holmes, bowled two spells, each of five overs, returning figures of 4-49 from 10 overs. Others to turn their arm over were H Norman (0-35 from 7), Gary Newall (0-16 from 1) and John Freeman (0-5 from 1). Rain arrived to wash out any chance of Bradninch making a successful run chase.
Hampton was the next team in action at Bradninch with the touring side from Middlesex fielding first, restricting Bradninch to a score of 72-5 with John Freeman top scoring with 34 and John McKinnell chipping in with 22. The other home batting scores were Terry Newall (3), Mike Foan (2), Gary Newall (4), J Robertson (0) and Ed Andress (1not out). The touring side then scored 105-3, seeing out their 20 overs after they had ‘won’ the game. Steve Birley (1-36 from seven), John Freeman (1-27 from five) and John Wykes (1-9 from three) were the home bowlers to enjoy success. Others to turn their arm over were Gary Newall (0-1 from 5) and Ed Andress (0-19 from four).
It was a County Cup match next with Chudleigh the midweek evening visitors to Bradninch. John Freeman was yet again the top scorer for the home side with a knock of 20 from the opening berth. Terry Newall, who opened with Freeman, scored 12 and Gary Newall, batting at six, scored an unbeaten 13. Other Bradninch batters were Paul Nott (4), Mike Foan (0), Ed Andress (5), J Robertson (3) and Dave Holmes (12 not out) in a total of 72-7 from 18 overs. Chudleigh sealed a six-wicket win, Michael Birley returned the pick of the Bradninch bowling figures with 3-10 from 3.1 overs. Paul Nott (1- 8 from 4), was the other successful bowlers. Dave Holmes, Steve Birley, John Freeman and H Norman were the other bowlers to see action.
Countess Wear played host to Bradninch for a June 10th friendly. The home side batted first and closed on 171-6 after 44 overs. S Wilson top scored with 59 and fellow opener G Salter scored 32 while R Baitup chipped in with 28. Paul Nott (2-59 from 14), Jon Wykes (2-37 from 9) and Steve Birley (2-23 from 15), were the wicket takers with the other bowling returns being: Ed Andress (0-20 from 4) and G Newall (0-15 from 2). Bradninch were then bowled out for 59 with only opener Gary Newall (24) and Paul Nott, batting at number four and scoring an unbeaten 20, managing to make it into double figures. G Salter claimed a six-wicket haul. There were no fewer than five ducks recorded with the unfortunate Bradninch batters to get ducks being Andrew Allaway, Mike Chapman, Steve Birley, Nigel Dowrick and Vince Wilding. Ed Andress and Roger Fairbanks each scored one while Jon Wykes scored two and Mike Foan, who opened with Gary Newall, scored four.
A trip to Hatherleigh was made on June 16th and the hosting club batted first powering their way to an imposing total of 299-4. G Tidball and C Inniss both scored half centuries for Hatherleigh while, in terms of the Bradninch bowling effort, the wicket taking returns came from: Steve Birley (2-117 from 21 overs), Andrew Foster (1-63 from 10) and John Freeman (1-36 from 7). The others to bowl were E Andress (0-26 from 2) and Gary Newall (0-22 from 5). 10-man Bradninch were then bowled out for 117. Just two batsmen reached double figures with the main contribution coming from Alan Bance who scored 66 while Mike Foan hit 33. The other batting scores were John Freeman (1), Gary Newall (8), Andrew Foster (0), J Robertson (0), A Allaway (1), Ed Andress (4 not out), Mike Chapman (1) and Steve Birley (0). R Laughton and C Inniss both claimed three wicket hauls in a comfortable victory for Hatherleigh.
Next up was a League game at home to Honiton Royal British Legion who batted first and closed on 158-9 after 41 overs. R Doe top scored with 91 for the visitors while the home bowling returns were: Dave Holmes (3-30 from 13), Paul Nott (0-32 from 7), H Norman (1-39 from 6), John McKinnell (2-20 from 9) and Ed Andress (2-25 from 6). Bradninch were then dismissed for 86 with only Paul Nott making any impression with the bat, scoring 36 (hitting two sixes and two fours). M Bright took six wickets for Honiton while T Witt claimed the other four. The remaining Bradninch batting returns were Mike Foan (10), Jon McKinnell (0), Alan Bance (11), Gary Newall (0), John Freeman (9), Dave Holmes (2), Andrew Allaway (6), Ed Andress (0), Gary Chapman (6 not out) and H Norman (0).
A journey into East Devon to meet Kilmington on June 23rd saw the home side bat first and close on 264-7 thanks, in the main, to a century from Marsh who batted at three and came to the wicket in just the second over of the game after an Andrew Allaway catch had given Andrew Foster the first wicket of the afternoon. Lavender, who batted at two, hit 57 while number six bat, Wake, hit 45. Mike Foan claimed 5-33 from 7.2 overs. The others to bowl were Ed Andress (0-51 from 12), Andrew Foster (1-99 from 15) and Gary Newall (167 from 7). Gary Newall then top scored with 30 from the opening berth as Bradninch, who played with 10 men, were bowled out for 95. Kirkaldi took the bowling honours for the home side; his figures being 5-56. The full Bradninch batting line-up with scores in brackets, was G Newall (30), J Robertson (6), M Foan (14), A Foster (4), A Allaway (15), M Chapman (2), E Andress (8), N Dowrick (2), L Kent (3), G Chapman (0 not out).
The following day it was another away game with a trip up the North Devon Link Road to meet Bideford, Littleham & Westward Ho! The home side batted first and closed on 189-7. A Davis (55) and A Allin (41) were the principle run providers for the home team. The Bradninch bowling returns were Dave Holmes (3-50 from 16.4 overs), Steve Birley (0-33 from 5), Paul Nott (1-19 from 4), C Thornton (1-27 from 5), H Norman (1-32 from 8) and T Johnson (1-20 from 3). Bradninch were then bundled out for 54 inside 27 overs! The Bradninch batting returns were T Newall (5), G Newall (9), J Freeman (0), T Johnson (1), P Nott (11), M Foan (13), D Holmes (1), H Norman (1), E Andress (0), G Thornton (1), S Birley (0 noy out). P Sherborne was the star of the home bowling show with the amazing figures of 5-8 from 13.5 overs – there were just seven scoring shots scored off the Sherborne bowling while he also sent down 74 dot balls! T Stanton and T Hiller each claimed a brace of wickets for the home side.
The last day of June saw touring side Temple Cloud visit Bradninch and the home side batted first and were bowled out for just 51 in 29 overs! ‘Extras’ was the top home score with a total of 16, the best with the bat was the knock of 12 by Alan Bance while the only other double figure contribution being an unbeaten 10 from Steve Birley. The other Bradninch batting returns were Gary Newall (0), J Robertson (4), Mike Foan (7), Andrew Allaway (1). For players, Ed Andress, Mike Chapman, Gary Chapman, and Peter Elston all picked up ducks whole last man, Jim Chapman, was out for one. I Appleyard and Dowell both claimed four wicket hauls for the touring side. Temple Cloud then raced to a nine wicket win on53-1, the lone wicket taker being Steve Birley (1-17 from 8).
Hatherleigh visited Kensham Park for a League game on July 7th. Opener C Innis scored 65 and number six bat G Guard hit a nine-boundary unbeaten 57 as the visitors closed their 45 overs on 178-5. Gary Newall (2-41 from 7), Steve Birley (1-31 from 15, Ed Andress (1-29 from 11), John Freeman (1-29 from 4) and Andrew Foster (0-38 from 8), were the home bowling returns for Bradninch who were then bowled out for 97. They were 84-0 and so lost 10 wickets for the addition of 13 runs! John Freeman opened the innings and top scored with 51 while fellow opener Terry Newall chipped in with 22. There were no other double figure offerings with the bat with the scores being Alan Bance (4), Gary Newall (3) and Ed Andress (3) while Andrew Foster, A Anoop, J Robertson, Dave Trump and Steve Birley all registered ducks! R Laughton claimed 6-33 in 15 overs for Hatherleigh.
A trip to Barnstaple Nondescripts was the next outing where the home side batted first and closed on 192-7 from their 45 overs. B Roe (83) and R Cudmore (46) put on 111 for the opening wicket. The Bradninch bowling returns were T Blake (2-35 from 7), S Birley (2-50 from 16), H Norman (1-35 from 10), P Nott (1-49 from 9) and E Andress (0-18 from 3). Bradninch replied with an all-out total of 119 with only Gary Newall (39 not out), D Odgers (24) and Ed Andress (20), making any impression with the bat. B Jones, C Trewhella, and D Hallatt each claimed three wickets for the victorious hosts.
July 14th saw Bradninch in action at St Marychurch where they batted first and were bowled out for 135. Kevin Dolling, batting at number 10, top scored with a six-boundary 37. Andrew Allaway scored 33 but the only other double figure contributions were a knock of 19 from John McKinnell and no fewer than 25 ‘extras. The other Bradninch batting returns were Mike Foan (7), Gary Newall (0), Alan Bance (1), Andrew Foster (5), Jon Wykes (1) M Chapman (2) and Steve Birley, on his 21st birthday, unbeaten on 5. D Street and F Burley claimed three wicket hauls for the home side. Birley then claimed a ‘birthday five-fer’ – his figures being 5-53 from 20 overs. The other Bradninch bowling returns were: A Foster (1-33 from 10), Jon Wykes (0-29 from 7) and Gary Newall (0-4 from 2). St Marychurch sealed a four wicket win as they closed on 133-6.
A trip to Bideford to meet Victoria Park was made on July 15th. The home side batted first and closed on 197-8 with M Brown (53) and C Bettiss (51), the principle run scorers. All four of the Bradninch bowlers claimed at least one wicket with the returns being: Steve Birley (3-62 from 18), Gary Newall (2-25 from 4), Paul Nott (2-50 from 14) and H Norman (1-49 from 9). Bradninch were then bowled out for 78 with K Braund taking 5-19 from 16 overs. Paul Nott was the only batter to make any sort of impression, top scoring with 26. The only other double figure scores were 11 from Mike Foan and 10 from Kevn Dolling. The full Bradninch batting returns were G Newall (2), M Foan (11), P Nott (26), A Allaway (3), K Dolling (10), E Andress (4), N Dowrick (4), H Norman (2), S Birley (1), L Kent (0), P Elston (2 not out).
Dawlish were the visitors for a July 21st friendly. Bradninch batted first and closed on 128-8, this despite a wonderful 68 from Mike Foan. Foan opened the innings and carried his bat throughout! Such was the Foan dominance of the Bradninch innings that the ‘best of the rest’ was a knock of 16 from number eight bat Ed Andress. The biggest partnership of the innings was the 37 put on for the seventh wicket between Foan and Andress. The only other double figure score was the 13 that Dave Trump scored. The other Bradninch batting scores were J Robertson (8), J McKinnell (7), G Newall (0), A Bance (2), A Allaway (1), S Birley (2) and H Norman (0). P Elston was the only home player not to bat. C Cole claimed 5-41 in 21 overs for Dawlish who were then bowled out for 83 with Steve Birley (5-29 from 15) and Gary Newall (4-28) doing the damage.
Barnstaple Raleigh were the July 22nd visitors and, batting first, they were able to close on 168-8 thanks to an unbeaten 74 from number three bat R Bowden. Dave Holmes opened the bowling and, in two spells, returned figures of 4-47 from 19 overs. Steve Birley shared the new ball duties with Holmes and his return was (1-61 from 18). The other two to bowl were Hugh Norman (2-15 from 4) and Jon Wykes (1-18 from 4). Bradninch were bowled out for 91 with G Lavercombe claiming a ‘fivefer’. Gary Hancock top scored for Bradninch with 33 from the number four berth. John McKinnell (18) and Gary Newall (11) were the only other double figure scores. The other Bradninch batting returns were Mike Foan (7), A Allaway (0), J Roberton (1), J Wykes (3), D Holmes (1), E Andress (0), S Birley (0) and H Norman (0 not out).
The final game of July was a 29th local derby at home to Cullompton who fielded first and Bradninch ended their 45 overs on 127-3. The full batting return was John Freeman (21), Mike Foan (58), Gary Hancock (6), Alan Bance (31 not out) and Ed Andress (3 not out). The remainder of the Bradninch team was – J Robertson, H Norman, D Holmes, S Dunhill, L Kent and P Elston. The only Cully bowlers to have success were – M Baker (2-29 from 9) and R Hawkins (1-3 from 3). The others to bowl were N Gillett (0-20 from 12), M Hookway (0-30 from 10), M Ingersent (0-11 from 3) and R Heale (0-26 from 8). Cullompton were in trouble on 25-4 after 11 overs when rain arrived to wash out any chance of a finish. Dave Holmes and John Freeman both bagged a brace of wickets. The Cullompton batting was M Smith (6 not out), N Gillett (0), M Ingersent (8), K Norman (7), M Baker (3), A Garnham (0 not out). R Heale, D Percy, B Butt, M Hookway and R Hawkins did not bat.
August began with a League game at home to Nondescripts. Bradninch batted first and closed on 180-7 after 45 overs. Derrick Foan top scored with 70 and his brother Mike hit 50 – the pair adding 94 runs for the second wicket. Gary Hancock chipped in with 31. The other batting returns were J McKinnell (0), P Nott (1), D Holmes (10), J Robertson (1 not out), D Trump (0 not out). Hallett, Mortimer and Roe shared the wickets for Nondescripts who claimed a seven-wicket win, closing on 182-3 in 33.2 overs. R Cudmore (66), D Cassells (52 not out) and B Roe (34) did the damage with the bat. The Bradninch bowling returns were D Holmes (1-81 from 15), P Nott (0-33 from 9) and J McKinnell (2-46 from 9.2).
Next up was a visit from Ivybridge for a friendly. The visitors batted first and closed on 188-2 after 44 overs. J Purie top scored with an unbeaten 84 and B Bullock scoored 76. Alan Bance (1-23 from 5) and Steve Birley (1-35 from 12) were the successful bowlers. The others to turn their arms over were Ed Andress (0-28 from 7), P Nott (0-41 from 10), J Wykes (0-27 from 7) and J Freeman (0-18 from 3). Bradninch replied with a score of 147-7. They were given a ton start with the wicket falling on ‘Nelson’ (111). Jon Freeman top scored with 51 while Mike Foan scored 47. The best of the rest was 22 from extras while the best of the rest with the bat was a knock of 17 from John McKinnell.
St Marychurch were the August 11th visitors to Bradninch. Batting first, the men from South Devon were, at one stage, 59-6 and then 67-8 before recovering to close on 137-9. Knapman top scored with 43. Hugh Norman took the bowling honours with a return of 4-22 from 13 overs. There were two wickets each for Ed Andress and Gary Newall and one wicket for Jon Freeman. Bradninch were then bowled out for 70 thanks to F Burley who claimed 5-9 from 12 overs! Mike Foan top scored from the number one slot with his contribution being 23, but the only other doubled figure score was the 13 scored by Jon Freeman while there were 12 extras. The other Bradninch batting returns were John McKinnell (4), Gary Newall (6), J Robertson (5), Dave Trump (2 not out), Kevin Dolling (0), Hugh Norman (5), E Andress (0), L Kent (0 not out) and Nigel Dowrick – did not bat.
The following day Victoria Park was the opposition at Kensham Park and, after batting first, Bradninch were bowled out for 149. Mike Foan once again provided the top score with his knock of 41. Foan and Terry Newall (28) put on 51 for the first wicket. The remainder of the home batting effort was Gary Newall (0), D Harris (28), J McKinnell (26), Alan Bance (7), Paul Nott (3), Ed Andress (0), Steve Birley (0 not out), Gary Chapman (0 not out). D Fishleigh, on as third change bowler, took 4-25 and S Lawrence had 3-60. However, Paul Nott then claimed the magnificent figures of 6-20 from 11 overs as Victoria Park were bowled out for 92 in 35 overs and four balls. Steve Birley, who opened the bowling with Nott, finished with 3-30 from 15.4 overs and the other wicket taker was Gary Newall (1-30 from 7). The other home bowler into action was John McKinnell (0-2 off 2).
Old Coulsdons were the August 19th visitors and they batted first reaching 202-2 from 40 overs. Tapp (78 not out) and Lumsden (55 not out) together with Gibbs (49) scored the bulk of the visitors runs. Ed Andress (1-30 off 11) and Hugh Norman (1-68 from 13) were the successful home bowlers. Bradninch were then indebted to Gary Newall for his excellent 69 as the home side were bowled out for 128 in a ball shy of 33 overs.
Countess Wear were the next team to visit Bradninch and the home side batted first with Paul Nott slamming 85, John Freeman weighed in with an unbeaten 34 and Dave Holmes scored 33 as the home side closed on 163-4. The visitors replied, closing on 115-9 in 41 overs. G Sharland top scored with 46 while, for Bradninch, Dave Holmes claimed figures of 5-29 and Steve Birley had figures of (3-42). P Nott (1-30 from 5), was the other wicket taker.
August 26th saw the Bradninch CC 1979 Bank Holiday Tour begin with a fixture against Flamingoes who batted first and were bowled out for 105. P Lynham top scored for the home side with 33. Gary Newall, into the attack as second change bowler, returned figures of 5-13 from nine overs. The other three bowling returns were: Steve Birley (2-24 from 13), Dave Holmes (2-29 from 14) and Paul Nott (1-25 from 10). Bradninch then sealed a two wicket win on 108-8 thanks toa knock of 39 from Paul Nott and an unbeaten 22 from Gary Newall.
The second game of the tour saw Bradninch in action at Christchurch where they batted first and closed on 169-6. Derrick Foan carried his bat, finishing unbeaten on 78. With fellow opener Jon McKinnell scoring 43 – the pair put on 87 for the first wicket and Dave Holmes slammed a quick-fire 22. S Cox claimed four wickets for Christchurch who replied with an all-out total of 122. Eddie Andress took the bowling honours with a 4-49 from 11 overs return. Steve Birley sent down 10 overs and claimed 3-12 while Dave Holmes finished with figures of 3-41 from 15 overs.
It was back to Bradninch for the next game, one that saw Whitmore visit Kensham Park for a game that took place on August 31st. The visitors batted first and closed on 172-6 after 42 overs. P Bailey top scored for Whitmore with a knock of 54. The Bradninch bowling returns were Dave Retter (4-71 from18), Steve Birley (1-42 from 14), Gary Newall (1-21 from 3) and Jon Freeman (0-27 from 7). Bradninch raced to an eight wicket win thanks to an unbeaten 69 from Jon Freeman and an unbeaten 29 from Gary Newall – the pair adding 76 for the unbroken third wicker. At the top of the order, Mike Foan hit 56.
September 2nd saw the second ‘local derby’ of the 1979 season with Bradninch making the short trip across to Cullompton where they batted first and closed on 151-6 from 45 overs. The Bradninch batting order/returns were Jon McKinnell (50), M Foan (17), Terry Newall (1), Gary Newall (0), Jon Freeman (27), Paul Nott (28 not out), Dave Holmes (9), Ed Andress (7 not out). J Robertson, M Phillips and P Elston were the three ‘did not bat’ folk for Bradninch. For Cullompton, the bowling returns were Dave Retter (2-52 from 19), R Heale (2-27 from 11), N Gillett (0-27 from 6), M Baker (0-23 from 4) and M Hookway (0-21 from 4). Cullompton then claimed a six wicket win as they closed on 154-4, thanks to an unbeaten 47 from Mike Ingersent, 36 from S Newcombe and 27 from M Baker. Paul Nott bagged a brace of wickets with his return being 2-36 from 10. The other bowlers used were Dave Holmes (1-71 from 19.5), Jon Freeman (1-11 from 4) and Jon McKinnell (0-24 from 5).
September 8th took Bradninch to Morchard Bishop where the home side batted first and scored 223-2 thanks to a wonderful 111 retired from G Burrow and a 47 retired from A Wimberley. Ed Andress (1-69 from 15) and Peter Elston (1-23 from 5), were the Bradninch wicket takers. Gary Newall then hit an unbeaten 58 as Bradninch replied on 91-7 after 28 overs. The Bradninch batting returns were M Foan (8), G Newall (58 not out), J Robertson (0), G Chapman (4), E Andress (7), F Baker (0), A Noon (2), P Elston (6). Peter Blight took 4-24 from a dozen overs.
The final game of the 1979 season was a September 9th visit to Thorverton where the home side batted first and, thanks to a Simon Molineux century (he scored 105 before becoming one of six victims for Dave Holmes) the Thors were able to close on 249-8. The Holmes return was 6-72 from 19 overs. Paul Nott finished with figures of 1-77 from 13 overs while Hugh Norman sent down 11 overs (0-73) and the other bowler used was Gary Newall (0-22 from 2). Newall then top scored with an unbeaten 74 and Dave Holmes hit an unbeaten 32 – the pair putting 107 together for the unbroken third wicket. Bradninch closed on 130-2 with the only batsmen to miss out being Mike Foan (0) and Paul Nott (12).

MIKE FOAN scored the most runs in the campaign with his total being 513 at an average of 16.06. JOHN FREEMAN came next with his total being 482 at an average of 30.1. GARY NEWALL scored 437 runs at an average of 23.00. JONATHAN MCKINNELL scored 347 runs at an average of 23.13.
BOWLING
