The 2004 BAILS BASH turned into a huge success thanks to those who did turn out on a September day that began in cloudy conditions and ended with the rain falling – again!
Owing to the numbers – 14 stepped into the breach to be involved – it was decided to play a PAIRS MATCH where batting pairs were drawn and it was decided that each pair should face five eight-ball overs.
If a wicket was lost during the five overs that each pair faced, then five runs would be deducted from their total and a six was deemed to be six-and-out which meant if a six was scored it was just a single run added to the total.
The first batting pair up were STEVE & ALAN. Peter (1-6), Jackson (0-17), Bobby (1-7), Faye (0-11) a JR (1-7) sent down overs and the pair ended with a score of 33.
OLI & WILL were the second pair to the crease and the bowlers were: Justine (1-3), Nikki (1-8), Liam (0-11), Phoebee (0-11) and Steve (0-19) – though there was a run out in the final over and the second pair to bat finished with a similar score to the first pair – 33.
PETE & ELLIE were up next and the bowlers they faced were: Bobby (0-5), Faye (0-5), Phoebee (0-6), Alan (2-5) and Oli (0-14). In the Alan over there was a stunning slip catch held by Steve and the batting pair ended with a score of 27.
Up fourth were the pairing of JUSTINE & JACKSON and they faced the bowling of: Nikki (0-7), Liam (1-6), JR (0-5), Steve (2-6) and Will (0-5). In the Steve over we saw a fine catch by Liam who was keeping wicket to dismiss Justine and then, in the same over Jackson was bowled – that led to the youngster saying to the bowler: “Why did you have to do that to me!” The batting pair ended with a score of 14.
The fifth pairing to the wicket were BOBBY & NIKKI and they faced the bowling of: Faye (2-14), Ellie (0-13), Jackson (1-16), Phoebee (0-7) and Alan (1-10). This meant that, with young Bobby scoring 43 (but having two six-and-out moments) and Nikki contributing five – the pair ended their spell with the bat on a top score of 35.
Pair number six were LIAM & FAYE and they faced the bowling of: Oli (0-10), Pete (0-13), Justine (1-11), Bobby (1-3) and finally, Steve (0-5). This pair ended with a total of 30.
The last pair out to bat were JR & PHOEBEE – and they faced the bowling of: Will (0-8), Ellie (0-4), Jackson (0-5), Nikki (1-4) and Liam (0-1). There was also a run out in the Liam over and also a catch held by Bobby off the bowling of Nikki and the pair ended with a total of 17.
This all meant that the final scores for the 2024 BAILS BASH were………
1st Bobby & Nikki 35
2nd = Steve & Alan 33
2nd = Will and Oli 33
4th Liam and Faye 30
5th Pete and Ellie 27
6th JR and Phoebee 17
7th Ellie and Jackson 14.
However, on the day, thanks to HOOCH taking round the collection tin a figure of almost £80 was raised for the BAILS BASH charity collection and that money will be taken by Hooch and paid into the charity account.
Yes, we may have had a pair of winners, but, on the day, EVERYONE who played and everyone who spectated, helped to make the day a SUPERB ONE and full justice was done to the memory of our very dear, and very own, SIMON BAILEY.
